Watching this video makes me want to brush up on and study the Urdu script (Nasta’liq) again. Urdu is a beautiful language and it’s script is one of the greatest treasures in all of human history. The word Nasta’liq is derived from the word Naskh (Arabic script). Arabic is written diagonally on a straight line but Urdu is written in a slant diagonally. Nasta’liq means “hanging”, that’s why written Urdu is known as the hanging script. The Nasta’liq is definitely one of the most beautiful and artistic writing systems in the world.
The man in this video is an American diplomat to Pakistan and he studied Urdu and the Nasta’liq at Chicago University.
