(The Shrine and mosque of the Prophet Muhammad’s granddaughter Zaynab, located in Damascus, Syria)
The beautiful mosque of Sayyida Zaynab (Lady Zaynab), which is located in Damascus Syria, is one of the holiest sites for the Shi’a Muslims. Zaynab was a granddaughter of the Prophet Muhammad (Muhammad’s daughter Fatima’s daughter) and she is revered by the Shi’a as being one of the six holiest people in history, along with the Prophet Muhammad, his daughter Fatima al-Zahra, his son-in-law and cousin Ali, and his grandsons Hasan and Husayn. To the Shi’a Zaynab was one of the people known as ahl al-bayt (people of the household) and Shi’a regard them as the true heirs of the Prophet Muhammad as the ahl al-bayt were blood relatives of Muhammad and the Sunni Caliphs were not his heirs. The mosque of Zaynab is very popular among women and it is also known as a woman’s mosque. Thousands of Shi’a pilgrims visit the mosque each year. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in the Islamic world.
