(The Shrine of ‘Ali, Najaf, Iraq, one of the holiest sites for Shi’ites)
The Shrine of Ali, also known as the Mosque of Ali, is one of the holiest sites for the Shi’ite Muslims and is another beautiful building from the Islamic world. The Mosque was built in 977 by the Buyid Dynasty, who were Persian Shi’ites. To the Sunni Muslims Ali was the fourth of the four predecessors of Muhammad, known as the Rightly Guided Caliphs (Rashidun). To the Shi’a Imam Ali was the true and rightful leader after Muhammad, not the three other Caliphs ( Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman).
