(Just one of the Mesopotamian Gilgamesh flood tablets written in Cuneiform, 7th Century B.C.)
We all know that the great Prophet Noah (also the Angel Gabriel) saved the human race from the great flood, as it was recorded in the Book of Genesis, which is the first book of the Torah written by the great Prophet Moses (under the direction of Heavenly Father) around 3 and half thousand years ago. But did you know that after the flood, the beginning of human tribes, thousands of tribes from around the world has passed down their version of the true story of the great flood, and many of them became epics. There are flood stories recorded/passed down orally by almost every ancient civilization that has existed on every continent on earth.
As the sons of Noah and their descendants (all humans) were separated into tribes for thousands of years, each flood story differs slightly (mainly character names/names of god and the shape of the ark). The earliest written flood story is the Epic of Gilgamesh, which was written in Cuneiform script (Sumerian) in Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq) around 2100 B.C. The Epic of Gilgamesh was recited orally (an epic) for thousands of years, and recited down generations before it was finally written down on clay tablets. Of course after being recited for thousands of years the true event of the great flood and Noah’s record became mixed with the words and story’s of men. Gilgamesh is Noah, but the Sumerians told the story as if Noah was an ancient Sumerian king.
The most truest and exact record of the great flood can of course be found in the Bible. When the lord chose the Hebrews to be his chosen people (the people he would reveal himself to first, through the Torah), the lord revealed to Moses the real story of the great flood as Moses was writing Genesis. While it is not known weather Moses translated Genesis from ancient records like Joseph Smith, it is of course known that Moses wrote Genesis under the direction of Heavenly Father.
I have also compiled a list of some other ancient civilizations that have their own version of the flood story. (I could not list all the civilizations that have their own accounts of the flood, but I have listed a few to give you all an idea)
The Ancient Near East:
The Sumerian and Babylonian accounts (The Epic of Gilgamesh)
The Arab (descendants of Ishmael) account
The ancient Greek accounts
Many ancient African tribes also have their accounts of the flood, some of the tribes are Kwaya, Mbuti, Maasai, Mandin and Yoruba.
In the ancient holy text the Shatapatha Brahmana, their is the story of the great flood.
Yu the Great
Great Flood (China)
Nu’u (Hawaian account)
Ruatapu (Maori account)
Hopi Mayan account
Comox people account
All the great peoples of South America have their own account of the flood, just to list a few they are the Olmec’s (Jaredites of the Book of Mormon) the Inca’s, the Tupi tribe and the Mapuche people e.t.c.
I find it absolutley fascinating that every single part of the world, on every continent there are accounts and records of the great flood.
I bare my testimony that the great flood happened, and it was a flood that covered the entire earth, as every civilization can also testify of.
